Tattoo Aftercare

Review our aftercare information for tattoos! We recommend seeing a tattoo artist in person for a more personalized aftercare plan.

Aftercare Information

Initial Care (First 3 Days)
  • Bandage: Keep it on for at least 3 hours (or as directed).
  • Washing: With clean hands, gently wash your tattoo 2-3 times daily with warm water and mild liquid soap like Dr. Bronner’s Baby Mild. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean paper towel. Let air dry for 5-10 minutes before applying a thin layer of Aquaphor or A&D ointment.
  • Washing: Reduce washing to once daily.
  • Moisturizing: Apply a light, fragrance-free lotion like Aveeno or Cetaphil. Avoid picking or scratching to prevent fading and infection.
  • No soaking (baths, hot tubs, pools, oceans, etc.).
  • No shaving over the tattoo until fully healed.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds. Once healed, apply sunscreen to protect the colors.

While rare, infections can usually be avoided with proper aftercare and good hygiene. Drink water, rest, and wear loose, clean clothing. If you notice signs like prolonged redness, unusual discharge, heat from the tattoo, or fever, contact your artist or a medical professional.

If you experience excessive redness, bumps, or rashes, it’s often due to lotions rather than tattoo ink. Consult your artist or a dermatologist if concerns arise.
